A prosperous region

BioBasque represents a relatively new endeavour in the Basque Country, a dynamic and prosperous region that enjoys a high quality of life, set in beautiful landscapes.

Age-old traditions and an ancient language are intertwined with new technologies and innovation, free and universal health care, and good economic management (with a government granted an AAA Standard & Poors rating).

The Basque Country in brief:

  • Area: 7,235 km2.

  • Population: 2,112,204 (5 % of Spain).

  • Main cities:

    • Bilbao.

    • Donostia • San Sebastian.

    • Vitoria • Gasteiz.


  • Official languages: Basque and Spanish.

  • Two international airports, ports and good general infrastructure. Atlantic logistic hub.

  • Well educated labour force: 4 Universities, more than 100 degrees, 100,000 students, and 6,500 lecturers.

  • 51 hospitals, 442 primary attention centres, 24,000 professionals, 4.5 doctors per 1,000 inhabitants.

  • High standard of life: 125.5 % GDP per capita (compared to EU, 2005).

  • A growing economy: 4.2 % annual GDP growth (2006).

  • Industrial tradition:

    • 29 % contribution to GDP (2005), ten points above EU average.

    • 10 % of all industrial production and 10 % of Spanish exports.


  • Business involvement: 2/3 of R&D investment is of private origin.

  • An international leader in environmental and quality certificates.
