The company AJL Ophthalmic, focused on the design and manufacturing of intraocular lenses and the research on eye-related diseases, has invested five million euros in a new manufacturing plant at the Alava Technology Park.

The new premises, with an overall surface of 3,000 m2, are placed in a 6,000 m2 land and include a laboratory for intraocular lenses manufacturing and seven clean rooms used for quality control, packaging and sterilisation of medical devices. Moreover, the building provides health care professionals with additional spaces for Research & Development activities to undertake innovation projects. This is another business area for this company.

In 2009, AJL Ophthalmic's turnover accounted for 7 million euros. It is the only Spanish company manufacturing intraocular lenses, competing in the market with other international firms like Alcon or Bausch&Lomb. In alignment with its growth strategy, the company is focusing on business diversification leading to the design of additional products to be used in intraocular surgery such as a glaucoma valve or intracorneal rings, and to the distribution of other ophthalmology products.
