Last September, the Basque company AJL Ophthalmic, devoted to eye disease research and the design and manufacturing of intraocular lenses, acquired the Ophthalmology Unit of Izasa, the multinational company focusing on the hospital sector and clinical diagnosis.
Accordingly, the Basque company's portfolio will now include a wide range of equipment for exploration, refraction and refractive eye surgery together with many accessories for the ophthalmology market in Spain and Portugal.
The acquisition will enable AJL Ophthalmic to have new equipment for diagnosis (corneal topography, ophthalmoscopy, biometry, pachimetry, OCT, tonometry or specular microscopy), for refraction (keratometry, refractometry, ophthalmometry or retinoscopy) and for surgery (laser systems, criosurgery, keratomes, femtosecond laser or facoemulsifier).
According to managers of the Basque company, it is a "significant milestone since this acquisition will enable us to strengthen the firm's presence in the ophthalmology market. We grow not only in number but also in services, as today we can provide any kind of ophthalmological equipment both for diagnosis and for surgery", they point out.
AJL Ophthalmic is the only manufacturer of intraocular lenses in Spain, and has recently invested five million euros in a new factory located at the Alava Technology Park, housing a manufacturing plant.
