The Basque BioRegion considers highly positive its participation in the BIO 2010 convention in Chicago, the fourth consecutive one led by the BioBasque Agency. The delegation, made up by some thirty entities, is very satisfied with the results and the important portfolio of potential clients and partners they bring back.
The companies have fulfilled their objectives in terms of product commercialisation and have made the most of the partnering activity, even firms such as Progenika and BTI already present in the United States and other countries.
Contacts with potential clients have been essential, as mentioned by Marcos Simón from DRO Biosystems. Moreover, Ikerchem representatives have confirmed the interest of biopharmaceutical companies in their preclinical programmes and have continued negotiations started in previous events, namely ECCP and BioEurope Spring. Similarly, for Owl Genomics BIO 2010 was the forum to meet clients with whom “negotiations are pretty advanced” in addition to exploit “very interesting contacts to open new development paths in our company”, explains Teresa Porto.
Several companies have additionally identified technologies and services for their own projects. Marta Acilu, from Histocell, highlights the “analysis of external technology –licensing in- to be exploited by Histocell”.
Firms such as Bioftalmik have profited from their attendance to the event to assess the opening of new facilities, starting by providing services to international companies, and others have been successful finding distributors. Innoprot expects “to close an agreement and to distribute its products in Japan, United States and Switzerland”.
The Head of the BioBasque Agency, María Aguirre, recalls that, in addition to the good results, “there was a better feeling than that of 2009, and despite the crisis, BIO 2010 has confirmed that the life sciences sector continues to grow”.
