The Eduardo Anitua Foundation for research into biomedicine has been set up in Vitoria to channel advances in regenerative medicine to social ends. Set up by Eduardo Anitua, Scientific Director of the company BTI Biotechnology Institute and President of the Foundation, it is a non-profit organisation with the objective of promoting and developing scientific research and communicating it to society at large.
In the short term, the new organisation will focus on four main areas: degenerative joint diseases; eye diseases, especially corneal ulcers; the treatment of skin ulcers; and support for problems associated with the existence of the illness known as diabetic foot.
In the words of its creator, Eduardo Anitua, the new foundation is set up “to promote auxiliary activities so that less-well off groups can be treated with the latest advances in biomedicine". Also, with the same social aims, the organisation will promote biomedical research applied to regenerative medicine, scientific communication of the advances made by the institution itself and specialised training for the professionals of the future.
The new foundation’s first event was held on the 31st October 2009, and was the organisation of the 1st International Symposium on Translational Regenerative Medicine. It took place in the Palacio Europa in Vitoria, and a large number of international experts on the topic were present.
