The Basque company OWL Genomics, specialising in the field of metabolomics applied to the development of biomarkers to diagnose liver diseases, continues its consolidation and growth with the recent transfer to its new headquarters in the Bizkaia Technology Park. These new premises, covering 500 m2 and located in building 502 at the Park, provide the company with space for additional facilities and equipment assigned for both R&D and production.
On this path of expansion, OWL Genomics has also been reinforced with the incorporation of a new managing director. The person is Julián Sánchez Alegría, former General Manager of the Bizkaia Technology Park, who has held several positions of responsibility related with innovation and economic development, such as Deputy Chairman of the Spanish Association of Science and Technology Parks (APTE), Executive President of the Basque Network of Technology Parks and Executive Vice-president Association to Promote Industrial Land (SPRILUR). Sánchez Alegría has also sat on the boards of the Basque Innovation Agency (Innobasque) and of the Cooperative Research Centres CIC bioGUNE and CIC biomaGUNE.
OWL Genomics develops pioneering applications in the area of preventive medicine, based on the identification of biomarkers using state-of-the-art technology. More specifically, its activity focuses on the design of early diagnostic and prognostic systems for hepatic and metabolic diseases.
OWL Genomics is currently starting to market its first commercial product: a system to diagnose steatosis (fatty liver disease) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, called owl liver. It is the first diagnosis method based on a non-invasive blood analysis for these illnesses, which are increasingly prevalent due to their connection with obesity. Within the company’s commercial strategy, owl liver stands out as the starting point for a pipeline of new products which will reach the market in forthcoming years.
