The scientific corporation Tecnalia and the biotech company Histocell announced at Biospain 2010 their strategic alliance for the development of a new product in the field of regenerative medicine.

This agreement will couple Tecnalia's knowledge in the field of biomaterials and Histocell's expertise in cell therapy to obtain a drug to repair long-bone defects.

The goal of these two Basque organisations is to offer a solution for over 200,000 patients suffering from critical bone mass loss as a consequence of traumas or bone tumours.

This agreement is a new cooperation paradigm between technology centres and private companies, since both institutions will equally share in the investments for product development and in the ownership and exploitation of the results from this research.

Tecnalia is a multidisciplinary private and independent corporation, being the first private centre for applied research in Spain and the fifth in Europe. 52% of its income proceeds from the activities developed for innovative corporations and SMEs, that require Tecnalia's services and products that ultimately result in good business results and the welfare of society in general.

Histocell is a biotechnology company specialised in Tissue Engineering and Cell Therapy within Noray BG (Noray Biosciences Group). Histocell, and more specifically its Clean Room, is the second Spanish body to receive the “Manufacturer of Cell Therapy Medicinal Products” certification of the Spanish Medicine and Healthcare Products Agency. This enables the company to manufacture cell therapy medicinal products approved by the European Union. Histocell has framed this project within its Bone Regeneration therapeutic program, developed jointly with Salvat pharmaceuticals. Other therapeutic programmes in Histocell include Joint Regeneration, Healing and Neuroregeneration.
