Biobide publishes the results of its zebrafish research in the journal Oncogene
Biobide is a biotechnology company that specialises in zebrafish, which share 85% of their DNA with humans and whose transparent embryos develop in 24-48 hours. These properties allow the effects produced upon administration of new compounds to be studied more cheaply and in a shorter time period than with other animal models.

Histocell develops a cell therapy-based lung treatment together with CSIC and the Hospital Clinic
Histocell, which specialises in regenerative medicine, has invested 3 million euros to develop a cell-based drug for pulmonary fibrosis based on research begun by Dr. Anna Serrano, from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), and Dr. Antoni Xaubet, from the Clinic Hospital in 2004. The results of this study showed that certain lung cells could be used to recover lost lung function in patients suffering from pulmonary fibrosis.

CIC bioGUNE researchers discover a new therapeutic target to fight liver cancer
A group of researchers of the Metabolomics Unit of CIC bioGUNE, led by Dr. Martinez Chantar, has taken a new step in the study of liver cancer, revealing the molecular mechanism, which was unknown until now, involved in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma. They observed how the malignancy of this disease may be related with overexpression of a protein, HuR.

Tecnalia and Donostia Hospital develop a breath-based sensor for detecting lung cancer
Tecnalia and the Donostia Hospital are participating in the Interreg Medisen project, which aims to develop biosensors that are able to detect early-stage lung cancer via the breath. The breath of both healthy and sick humans contains numerous organic compounds, such as acetone, methanol, butanol and hydrocarbons. When a person falls sick, the changes occurring inside their body are reflected in their breath, which could therefore allow the presence of certain biomarkers to be detected.
