Showcase for a dynamic Bioregion

BioBasque presents its new bimonthly Newsletter

Welcome to the first BioBasque Newsletter, a news bulletin to be published every two months and launched with the intention of sounding out the Basque Bioregion, of informing about its activities and of acting as a vehicle to build bridges inside and outside the Basque Country.

In the last six years the Basque Bioregion, a geographical area where activities that take place in the field of life sciences are interrelated and share a common strategy, has managed to maintain a steady, continuing growth rate. Under the guidance of the BioBasque Agency, the endeavours of researchers, enterprises and institutions have always been directed towards achieving a final goal: the creation of a new business sector related with biosciences which, in the widest sense, might contribute to industrial diversification and harnessing the opportunities provided by the knowledge-based economy.

This goal has now become a reality, with the existence of a young, developing sector that currently consists of more than 70 companies, with turnover of about 304 million euros, provides direct employment for 1,480 personas and indirectly employs a similar number. It is a sector intimately linked to R&D, in which innovation and internationalisation are inherent features that define its nature, and based on a growing research community equipped with powerful technological capacities and which excels in specific fields of biosciences, a sphere that has a considerable impact on a wide variety of economic sectors.

The biosciences sector in the Basque Country is now, more than ever, a strategic sector. In a context of economic recession like the present one, Basque biocompanies embody qualities that make it possible to overcome the crisis and go deeper into an economic model for the future: they have high levels of investment in R&D, provide highly qualified and skilled employment, attract very specialised demand, deal with global markets and are experiencing growth.

This BioBasque Newsletter is a tool to disseminate what biosciences, or life sciences, represent in the Basque Country, and seeks to become a reflection of the achievements and the main news that take place in the bioregion, both from the business and research point of view. The Newsletter will include a selection of news items and an interview, among which there will always be a space for reflection and analysis.

Welcome to BioBasque News.
