One of the products developed by the Basque biotechnology company Progenika obtained the recognition of the XV International Symposium on Atherosclerosis, held in Boston (U.S.A.) in June last. More specifically, this means the backing of the scientists taking part in the Symposium, who emphasized that the Progenika LIPOchip is the only tool in the world capable of detecting isolated mutations and large-scale reordering in the receptor gene for LDL cholesterol, commonly known as “bad cholesterol”.

The LIPOchip is a DNA biochip for the diagnosis, prognosis and response to treatment for family hypercholesterolemia and was the first biochip in the world with CE marking, which certifies compliance with all European Union quality, reliability and safety requirements, as well as authorising its marketing and sale.

Progenika has development and production facilities in the Bizkaia Technology Park and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (U.S.A.). In addition, this leading company in personalised medicine has a laboratory in the United Arab Emirates and sales and patents offices in Madrid and London.

The Progenika facilities are authorised to produce in vitro diagnosis systems by the Ministry of Health, an indispensable condition to put CE marking on products. Moreover, the laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is the only one in the world working on blood diagnosis that has CLIA certification awarded by the United States Federal Authority.
