The consortium of the SmartHEALTH European project met in the Basque Country on 6th, 7th and 8th November, hosted by the Basque Foundation for Health Innovation and Research (Fundación Vasca de Innovación e Investigación Sanitarias – BIOEF), to exchange knowledge about the last year's work and plan the next one. The consortium is made up of 30 members from different European countries and is led by a research group from the University of Newcastle in UK.
The SmartHEALTH project, which is receiving funding of 21 million euros from the European Commission, started up in December 2005 and will last four years. The aim of the project is to develop a "point of care" by bringing together information technologies, computing, nanotechnology, and molecular biology applied to the genetic diagnosis of colo-rectal, cervical and breast cancer. Participating in the project are two research groups from Osakidetza, who are developing the colo-rectal cancer line. Major advances have been made during these two years of working.
